The Woodcut Show
Woodcut has been synonymous with printmaking for over 1000 years and yet as a medium still has the power to illicit exciting, contemporary and challenging works of art. Woodcut, perhaps more than any other medium, shows the hand of the artist in direct dialogue with the medium.
This exhibition brings together printmaking artists, Denise Copland, Duncan Pepe Long, Graham Hall, Marty Vreede, Michel Tuffery, Sam Harrison who each explore the practice of woodcut from notably different perspectives.
Opening event with the artists, Saturday 4 July 1.00 - 3.00pm
Denise Copland‘s works are driven by concern for the consequences of the rate of change we are inflicting on the planet. Her interest in woodcut is best summed up by Shinko Munakata The way of the Print “The words “vast and boundless” well express its nature.”
Graham Hall has been making woodcuts for over 25 years and is still excited by the possibilities the surface of the wood block offers to the artist.
Sam Harrison’s prints are intricately detailed wood cuts, often large scale, meticulously crafted and show an empathy with his subject. He explores beauty and form but allows the raw nature of the wood to speak.
Michel Tuffery’s woodcuts reveals his empathy with the patterns and symbols of traditional Samoan Siapo (tapa) and Tatau (tattoo) designs, tied to a unique contemporary vision.
Duncan Pepe Long is a true draughtsman. His technical ability is always impressive and yet it is the temptation of chaos that brings his work to light with a sense of the poet - the Edgar Allan Poe kind.
