*arrivals* statement

It is with great pleasure that we present *arrivals*, contemporary works on paper from both near and far, our second show here at Solander.

*arrivals* began with a call for entries sent out to New Zealand artists via local networks. The invitation was also extended to artists who were encountered and worked alongside during travel in Canada and England.

We have all witnessed this current phenomenon of movement, of people arriving and leaving, of passing through - no more so than in New Zealand, it could be argued. The fluidity of people’s movements, and their interactions across the globe, has been largely influenced by the Internet and more affordable air travel, with destination, work, friendship, artistic influence no longer fixed by more traditional geographical boundaries. The Print itself is now as portable as the artist who creates it, thus opening up possibilities for artists to exhibit more widely, and to become a part of a global artistic community. Therefore it would seem pertinent as a means of introduction to mention the geographical location of the artists represented here in
*arrivals*.

Wanganui based artists represented in this show are: Catherine MacDonald, Margaret Silverwood, Graham Hall and Rowan Gardiner. Artists working locally in Wellington are: Sam Broad, Kerala Heap and Kyla Cresswell.

Kelvin Mann is a New Zealander who resides in Dublin. There he works as a professional printer at the Graphics Studio centre for printmaking.

Northern Print, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England is a wonderful, inspiring studio and gallery, which fosters printmaking in the North East region. Artists represented in this show from Northern Print are: Michelle Wood, Theresa Easton, Eunice Routledge and Jaqueline Quinn.

Atelier Circulaire, another open access print studio, is located in Montreal, Canada. Members from this studio who are represented in *arrivals* are: Manuel Lau, Wah Wing Chan, Louise Bloom, Manon Charbonneau, Judith Klugerman and Jacinthe Tetrault.

Damon Kowarsky hails from Melbourne and Paula Henihan from Dublin, Ireland. Yoko Iida is a Japanese born artist residing in LA. In 2005 she participated in a residency scheme in the Wairarapa.

We hope you enjoy the exhibition.
