5 April - 10 May 2008
As the year shifts gear, here is a new exhibition that encourages us to pause and
contemplate. In this show Kim presents a suite of layered monoprints and relief prints that echo hanging scrolls and relate to genealogical symbols like lattices, kowhaiwhai and the family tree.
Fresh from exhibiting with Marilynn Webb and Simon Kaan and currently
completing her Masters of Fine Art at Canterbury University, Kim Lowe draws on
her Chinese heritage in her investigation of historical Chinese art and design
forms. ‘Lao Shu’ the Neolithic Chinese design system representing the centre –
the Emperor and his people – is based on a magic square of 9 and is often found
in Chinese decorative patterns and latticework. Kim’s use of subdued colours
evokes the southern climate and kowhaiwhai painted patterns while including
recognisable symbols from nature such as toetoe heads, tide marks and the bare
branches of a Canterbury winter. A subtle and beautiful show not to be missed.
