Magical, Mundane and the Mystical: Devon Smith

3 November – 27 November 2010

An exhibition of new watercolours by Devon Smith.

Devon Smith is a painter and illustrator based in Wellington. The intimate scale of her portrait works on exhibition draws the viewer into her created world full of symbolism, ghosts and spirits. These symbols are used as a device to show the hidden feelings and motives of those depicted, and what lingering thoughts they are 'haunted' by. Devon’s work reflects the emphasis she places on drawing, a process she sees as fundamentally important for the creation of her paintings. Working predominantly in gouache, watercolour and pencil her paintings have a dreamy ethereal quality which lends itself well to these magical themes.
