Graham Hall: Life Journey

31 March - 24 April

Pre-opening artist talk 5pm.

Exhibition opening 5.30pm Wednesday March 31.

Opening at Solander on Wednesday 31 March is a new exhibition 'Life Journey' featuring works by Whanganui artist Graham Hall.

In this exhibition Hall explores how every human existence is made up of the light and the dark, the happy and the sad, the vital and the deadening. The artist believes that how we experience these shifts has a profound influence on our lives.

Graham Hall is a keen observer of the human condition, and over twenty years of printmaking has explored the experiences of others. In contrast, the work in this show explores the past three years of his life, his own "dark night of the soul".

The ten drypoints in Life Journey record the stages from a position of despair through to aspects of humour and understanding. While the work offers immediacy to the storyline, there are veiled references that underpin the narrative. The large scale of the prints and the deliberate slowness of marks reinforce the personal nature of the work where the experience helps to open new pathways.

Graham Hall has constantly explored the idea of a narrative and the use of sequential art. He produces work as a unified series of images, inspired by the Morale works of Hogarth, and the dramatic use of the engravers line from Gustave Dore. This exhibition challenges both artists and moves the work to a contemporary setting.

Please join us at 5pm prior to the exhibition opening for your opportunity to hear the artist introduce his work.
