Emma McCleary

Emma McCleary has a love of making prints – in particular woodcuts. Working from a home studio in the Wairarapa, McCleary prints with the use of a rolling pin. Adding further elements to the work by hand, she considers her works incomplete until they are drawn, painted, sewn or stamped on.

The artist has a deep love of the homemade, the era’s of the 1930's, 40's and 50's and is inspired by the New Zealand landscape and bird life.

Drawn to the magic of old wallpapers, McCleary is influenced by Florence Broadhurst and has recently used the Victorian Flower Language in her prints: a secret code from Victorian times where each flower is given a meaning. Rose for love, Rosemary for remembrance, Clematis for mental beauty.

Emma McCleary holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking) and a Post Graduate diploma in Museum Studies.
